After graduating, he moved to New York in 1990 to continue his comic book career. During his acting class, he was challenged to do a live stand-up comedy show, and from then on he fell in love with the stage. Although it took him about 7 years to find the right comedy style that suited him, the comedian finally decided to use a high voice in the third person to perform his jokes, which he calls the voice that refers to the audience.

He also starred in the movie The Love Guru alongside actor Mike Meyers and was featured in the sitcom Law & Order.

He appeared again in the teen comedy 17 and the comedy Away We Go by Sam Mendes. His comedic work was included in Comedy Central’s animated series Shorties Watchin’ Shortie, and in October 2005, he appeared in a live Comedy Central show that became his comedy album Beyond the Pale, which was primarily about the comedian making fun of Americans’ bad eating habits and the possible consequences. His next album was released in 2009 after his “The Sexy Tour” and he called it King Baby.

The comedian was nominated for a Grammy Award three times for his comedic works, which include Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe, who was nominated for Best Comedy Album in 2013, his comedy film Obsessed, which topped the Billboard Comedy Album Charts in 2014 and was nominated for Best Comedy Album in 2015, and Cinco, who was nominated for Best Comedy Album in 2018. He won an award at the American Comedy Awards for Concert Comedians in 2014 and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Morning Show on the CBS Sunday Morning Show in 2015. Gaffigan was named the most popular comedian on Pandora.com in June 2016, with spins to the tune of 647 million.
